Welcome to the Slauson Middle School athletics page!

Interscholastic Sports 2008-2009

Slauson is known as the "Home of the Golden Bears."  We are proud of the athletic and academic performance of our Slauson student-athletes.  Our sports programs rank with the best in participation, academic support, personal growth, and reputation for sportsmanship.  Middle school interscholastic sports are divided into five seasons, as shown below. ATHLETIC TEAMS practice/play 3-4-5 times per week, may have cuts (depending on the team number limitations and the number of eligible student-athletes who come out for each team) and are subject to academic eligibility rules. SPORTS TEAMS practice/play 2 times per week and have no cuts. We encourage all Slauson students to come out for any team they are interested in joining.  Student-athletes must attend the first week of practices and have all of their paperwork completed to be eligible to participate on EITHER ATHLETIC OR SPORTS TEAMS. Students-athletes who do not make an ATHLETIC TEAM may choose to play on a SPORTS TEAM in the same sport (if available) or may join another team in a different sport.

Students who wish to participate in ATHLETIC TEAMS at Slauson must meet the following requirements.

(1)        They must submit a Physical Card.  Physical Cards are available from Mr. Fuller, Slauson's Athletic Director, and in all House Offices.  The Physical Card must be signed by a parent or guardian, must indicate that the examining physician approves the student's participation in sports, and must be signed by the physician. ONLY PHYSICALS SIGNED AND DATED AFTER APRIL 15th  ARE ACCEPTABLE.  A standard physician's medical record will be accepted in place of a Physical Card, provided that it is signed and indicates the physician's approval for the student to participate in sports.  The green Ann Arbor Public Schools Health Appraisal form may be used for 6th graders.  Students may also obtain a free sports physical provided by the Ann Arbor Public Schools.  These will be held this year at SCARLETT School on Sept. 2nd and at SLAUSON School on Sept. 3rd.

(2)        They must turn in a completed Emergency Form.  These are included in the packet of information that is handed out at the required orientation meeting at the beginning of each season.

(3)        They must turn in a signed Participation Agreement.  The participation agreement packet includes team rules, academic standards, study hall regulations, standards for student-athlete and parent behavior, and travel permission.  Students receive a copy of this packet at the required orientation meeting at the beginning of each season.

(4)        Student-athletes wishing to participate on Slauson ATHLETIC (ALL) AND SPORTS  (3X) TEAMS THAT MEET 3 OR MORE TEAMS PER WEEK (see above chart) must be eligible according to the Ann Arbor Public Schools Academic Standards for Student Participation in Extracurricular Activities.

Proposed NEW Standard:  This proposed new standard MAY BE in place for the fall of 2008.  Season One student-athletes are automatically eligible, but will be subject to the NEW mid season eligibility if the standard is approved.

The Middle School Co-Curricular activities program will require the following academic eligibility in Tiers C and D (swimming, track, cross country, synchronized swimming, baseball, softball, basketball, volleyball, soccer, field hockey, and wrestling) and for any athlete participating in TWO (2) LEVEL B  activities (2 times a week) in any season:  (this provides eligibility for any student participating after school on 3 or more days per week)

BEGINNING ELIGIBILITY

        (A)   Each fall, every student is automatically eligible to begin a SEASON ONE sport.

(B)   To be eligible for SEASONS TWO THROUGH FIVE, a student must have a C- or higher in 5 out of 6 classes at the BEGINNING OF THE SEASON.    For the purposes of eligibility, the following equate to a C- or better:   any combination of P or S.

CONTINUING ELIGIBILITY

(C) At the THREE WEEK point in each season, a check will be made of every participant’s academic performance. If a student-athlete does not have a C- or higher in 5 out of 6 classes  Friday, he or she will become ineligible the next Monday.

(D)  Students who become ineligible at the THREE WEEK check may not practice or play or a minimum of ONE WEEK and until they have  a C- or higher in 5 out of 6 classes.

EXEMPTIONS

        (E)   Students who receive Special Education Services may be exempted from these standards if stated in their respective Individual Education  Plan (I.E.P.).

As students consider participating in sports with their parent(s) or guardian, they must understand the commitment that they will be expected to make when they decide to try out for a team. Students who come out for teams must make them their first priority for after school time.  Players will be expected to attend all practices and games.  This is especially important on ATHLETIC TEAMS where other student-athletes may have to be cut.   Only health, academic concerns, and family emergencies will be accepted as excuses from schedule practices and games.  This expectation is spelled out in the Participation Agreement.

If you have any questions or concerns, please call or email Slauson's Athletic Directors,  Rusty Fuller at 994-2004b fuller@aaps.K12.mi.us,  regarding ATHLETIC TEAMS, or Jon Strite 994-2004,  strite@aaps.k12.mi.us, regarding SPORTS TEAMS.
