Sophomore Katelyn Dybdahl called 'a ray of sunshine' as she confronts health challenges while remaining an essential part of the Skyline girls' swim team.

Adrienne Schadler, an incoming senior at Skyline High School, turned in a standout performance at the Toyota U.S. Open Nationals—advancing and competing across all five days of the meet as the only swimmer from her team to do so.

At the competition held July 31 through August 1, Adrienne placed 24th overall in the 100-meter freestyle with a best time of 56.16, earning her a spot in the 18-and-under final. She followed that up with a strong showing at the Speedo Junior National Championships, where she posted best times in every event, highlighted by a runner-up finish in the 200-meter freestyle at 2:00.22—a time ranked among the top 150 globally—along with a third-place finish in the 400-meter freestyle at 4:15.76. She also secured top-10 finishes in both the 800-meter freestyle (8:53.41) and the 100-meter freestyle (55.88), with the latter ranked 14th nationally among 17- and 18-year-olds.

Ann Arbor Public Schools welcomed English Learner families back to the district with its annual Back to School English Learner Fair, held at King Elementary School. The event drew about 400 people from 163 families, who came to pick up school supplies, connect with district staff and community partners, and meet other AAPS families ahead of the new school year.

For the third summer in a row, AAPS high school students ran a free Academic Games summer camp for elementary students. This year’s camp serves 60 campers in two one-week sessions and is led entirely by 19 volunteer high school students.

The camp introduces younger students to Academic Games, a program that combines strategy, teamwork, and critical thinking through competitions in math, language arts, social studies, and logic. Although Academic Games already has a strong presence across AAPS—with teams at King, Logan, Dicken, Thurston, and A2 STEAM elementary schools, Clague Middle School, all three comprehensive high schools, and participating students from Scarlett Middle School—Camp AG was created to introduce even more children to the program.

Ann Arbor Public Schools’ summer programs at Tappan Middle School are creating opportunities for students to strengthen skills, build relationships, and gain confidence ahead of the new school year. Running from late June through July, separate programs for middle school and high school students provide structured academic support alongside meals and transportation, ensuring access for all participants.
